Ninth Grade English introduces students to all genres of literature, such as short story, poetry, creative nonfiction, biographies and drama, and is designed to teach students how to analyze the various literary elements.  All study of literature is evaluated with the grid of a biblical worldview.  This course is also designed to develop the students’ vocabulary and grammar skills and, in the process, help students become proficient in the art of writing.  (Graduation Requirement)

Tenth Grade English is a survey course that focuses on the various genres of World Literature.  All study of literature is evaluated with the grid of a biblical worldview. This course is designed to further develop the students’ vocabulary, grammar and writing skills, and help them use these skills to respond to the various themes explored in their study of World Literature.  (Graduation Requirement)

This is a writing-intensive college-preparatory course.  Students will engage in writing various papers, and practicing modes of writing, such as persuasive, argument, expository and creative nonfiction.  They will also engage in creative writing and journal writing, and they will maintain a dialectical notebook for their various reading assignments.  This class strives to transform students into mature writers who mentor each other, with the ultimate goal of achieving proficiency in the art of writing.  (Graduation requirement unless student is taking Dual Enrollment English class.

 

 

Course: English 12 Literature

Prerequisite: English 9, 10, 11

Twelfth grade English is a literature based, college-preparatory course.  It allows students to build advanced skills in interpretive reading and in analyzing the elements of fiction in various genres of British Literature.  All study of literature is integrated with the study and application of biblical truths, as we seek to foster the development of a biblical worldview in our students’ hearts and minds.  This course is designed to further enhance students’ critical thinking, vocabulary, grammar and writing skills, as well as train students to use these skills to respond to the various themes explored in the study of English Literature.  This course also emphasizes the enhancement of students’ writing skills by giving them the opportunity to practice various modes of writing, with an added emphasis on writing literary analysis papers.

 

 

Course: Dual Enrollment English Composition 1010 & 1020

1 Year

Grades: 12

1 HS Credit

Prerequisite: A minimum GPA of 3.0, and a 19 composite ACT score.

First Semester (1010) – This class introduces students to the various modes of writing, such as exposition, argument, comparison and contrast, and process.  They practice extensively applying these rhetorical modes in their writing.  There is an emphasis on teaching students how to use MLA guidelines for writing papers, and doing proper documentation of sources.  The students are also expected to complete a research paper.  This class also trains students on how to engage in interpretive reading of essays and it challenges them to use critical thinking skills to understand arguments and reasoning.

Second Semester (1020) – Focus on reading and responding to short fiction, poetry, drama and/or non-fiction prose.  These courses must be taken in sequence  Each semester earns 3 college credit hours, for a total of 6 college credit hours and both semesters combined earn 1 high school senior English credit.  (Counts toward graduation requirement)
